The
Los Angeles Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) League is a
youth baseball and softball program offered to youngsters 10-18
years of age. Over
2000 kids participated in the league during the 2005 season.
RBI gives kids the
opportunity to play in an organized league in addition to
learning life skills in a prevention program.
It is a partnership of the City of Los Angeles Department
of Recreation and Parks, Santa Monica College, and Boys &
Girls Clubs of America. RBI
has two special partners in Major League Baseball and the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
On the field, RBI
concentrates on fundamentals and teamwork, while stressing
citizenship and academics.
Off the field, RBI players are taught Quick Smart (Skills
Mastery And Resistance Training).
This nationally acclaimed Boys & Girls Club
prevention program designed specifically for RBI assists kids in
learning how to make smart choices regarding alcohol, tobacco,
and other drug use.
Major funding for RBI has
been provided by Major League Baseball, the Amateur Athletic
Foundation of Los Angeles, Ralphs Food 4 Less Foundation,
Lagraphico, Inc., the Garth Brooks Touch ‘Em All Foundation,
former Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitcher Kevin Brown, and other
foundations that support youth athletics.
The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks in
collaboration with RBI oversees the Los Angeles Junior League
Program.
There
are 18 Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks centers
involved in the Los Angeles RBI Program and 28 area high
schools.
